How to register for the inburgering exam (and KNM)

Last checked: 29 October 2026

To register for the inburgering exam, log in to Mijn Inburgering with DigiD, choose the exam, a date and a location, and pay. This works for KNM, ONA and the A2 language exams. For B1 or B2 you register for the Nt2 state exam in Mijn DUO. MAP and PVT go through your municipality.

How to book KNM and the A2 exams in Mijn Inburgering

  1. Get a DigiD with SMS check, or the DigiD app. Mijn Inburgering needs one of the two (DUO form explanation).
  2. Log in to Mijn Inburgering. Check which exams you need and at which level. Book only those.
  3. Choose the exam. You can book one part or several.
  4. Choose a date and an exam centre. There are six: Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle (locations).
  5. Pay with iDEAL, by invoice, or from your DUO loan (exam rules, article 3). Each exam is €50. Asylum status holders under the 2021 law get 2 free attempts per exam.
  6. You agree to keep the exam confidential. You do this when you register or before the exam starts.
  7. You get a confirmation by email and by letter. One week before the exam DUO sends a letter with the date, time and place (inburgeren.nl).

DUO will not invite you until it has your payment. If you pay by invoice, pay it straight away so you keep your date.

How to register for the KNM exam

KNM is booked the same way as the A2 exams, in Mijn Inburgering. Everyone takes KNM, under both laws, and the fee is €50. It is a 45-minute computer exam. You can book it on its own, before or after your language exams. Read what the KNM exam is and how to pass it before your date.

Registering without DigiD: the paper form

If you cannot log in, use DUO's form "Aanmelding inburgeringsexamen" (download from inburgeren.nl). On the form you tick the exams you want, the city you prefer, and how you pay: by invoice or from your loan. Then you upload it through Mijn Inburgering or post it to DUO Servicecentrum Inburgering, Postbus 764, 9700 AT Groningen.

With the form you do not pick your own date. DUO plans it and sends you a letter with the date, time and place within 3 weeks after you pay. Registering online is faster.

How to book the B1 or B2 exam (Nt2)

At B1 or B2, the language exams are the Nt2 state exam. You register in Mijn DUO with your own DigiD (duo.nl):

  • Registration opens about 8 weeks before each exam date.
  • You can register for several parts at once.
  • You cannot register for a part you are already booked for or still waiting for a result on.
  • You pay €50 per part with iDEAL, by invoice, or from your loan (exam fees).
  • After you pay, a letter (oproepbrief) arrives 10 days before the exam with the place and time. No letter 10 days before? Email nt2@duo.nl.

If you cannot get a DigiD, duo.nl has a way to register without one. The full exam schedule is on staatsexamensnt2.nl. Our Dutch B1 exam page covers what the four parts look like.

MAP and PVT go through the municipality

Under the 2021 law, MAP (the labour market and participation module) and the PVT (participation statement) are arranged by your municipality. You do not book them with DUO (inburgeren.nl).

If you need an adjusted exam

If an illness or disability makes a normal exam hard, ask for an adjusted exam first. For KNM and A2, fill in "Aanvraag advies aangepast examen" in Mijn Inburgering. A doctor from Argonaut examines you and advises DUO. If DUO agrees, you register for the adjusted exam with the paper form, not online (inburgeren.nl). For Nt2, mention it when you register in Mijn DUO.

Book early, then practise

Waiting times can pass 6 weeks, and your 3-year deadline does not stop while you wait. Book the date first, then use the weeks before it. Start with a free 15-question KNM drill and the KNM chapter guides. Want a small reminder every week? Sign up for one KNM question a week.
