Is the KNM exam difficult? What makes it easy and what trips people up

Last checked: 29 October 2026

For most people the KNM exam is not difficult if they prepare. The questions are written in A2-level Dutch, use pictures and ask about everyday situations. What makes it hard is reading Dutch quickly for 45 minutes, answer options that look almost the same, and rules that work differently from your home country.

Why KNM is easier than people expect

The Dutch is basic on purpose. The official exam goals say the questions are written at A2 level and that pictures support the questions and answers (Staatscourant 2024, 15802). You do not need B1 Dutch to pass KNM.

The situations are everyday ones. A letter from the municipality, a sick child, a rental contract, a new job. If you have lived here for a while, you have met many of them already.

It is multiple choice. You do not write or speak. You read, look and click.

The topics are fixed. There are 8 official themes, from work and income to the state and the rule of law. You know in advance what can come up. Our page on what the KNM exam is lists them all.

What makes KNM hard

Answers that look alike. Often two options sound reasonable. The difference is one word, such as altijd (always), eerst (first) or mag (may) versus moet (must). People who read too fast lose points here.

Your common sense is not always the Dutch rule. "What would I do?" is the wrong question. The exam asks what is normal or required in the Netherlands. Who do you call first when you are ill at night? When must your child go to school? Many wrong answers come from habits from another country.

Reading for 45 minutes. 40 questions in 45 minutes is just over a minute each (inburgeren.nl). That is fine if you read Dutch comfortably. It is tight if every sentence takes effort.

History and politics. These feel far from daily life, so people skip them. They are still themes on the exam.

New subjects since July 2025. The exam now puts more weight on women's right to make their own choices and on knowledge of the Holocaust, and asks more about knowledge than behaviour (rijksoverheid.nl). Older study material may not cover this well.

How hard is KNM compared with the other exams?

DUO does not publish current pass rates per exam on inburgeren.nl. The most recent official breakdown we found is from 2015, in an answer to questions from the Dutch parliament (Aanhangsel Handelingen II 2015/16, 409):

Exam part (A2, situation on 1 Sept 2015)Pass rate
KNM85%
Listening73%
Speaking67%
Writing65%
Reading52%

These numbers are old. The KNM exam has changed since then, most recently on 1 July 2025. Still, they match what learners tell us: KNM is usually not the part that holds people back. Reading and Writing are. More on that in is the inburgering exam difficult, and every exam part is explained in the inburgering exam guide.

Is the KNM exam easy, then?

Not easy enough to walk in without preparing. A fail costs you another €50 and a new booking, and results take up to 8 weeks (inburgeren.nl). That is a lot of waiting for an exam you could have passed with a few weeks of study.

KNM is hardest for:

  • people whose Dutch reading is still slow,
  • people who only use common sense and skip the facts,
  • people who studied from material written before July 2025.

How to make KNM easier

  1. Take one of DUO's two free KNM practice exams first, with a timer (inburgeren.nl). Your score tells you how much work you have.
  2. Study theme by theme with our KNM chapter guides. Start with health and healthcare and education and upbringing, where home-country habits cause most mistakes.
  3. If reading is slow, learn the 594 most common Dutch words before anything else.
  4. Practise in short sessions and read every answer option to the end.

The full method is in how to study for the KNM exam, and a 4-week schedule is in how to pass the KNM exam.
