Why Speaking and Writing A2 take longer right now
Speaking and Writing are marked by people, not by the computer, and DUO has a backlog. In its news of 31 July 2026, DUO said it takes at most 16 weeks to check these two exams, instead of the usual 8. Exams are not all checked at the same time, so someone who sat the exam on the same day as you can get their result earlier or later (inburgeren.nl).
DUO says it will post any change to these waiting times as news on inburgeren.nl. If you are reading this months later, check there first.
What if your deadline is close
Waiting does not count against you here. If your integration period is nearly over and you are still waiting for a Speaking A2 or Writing A2 result, DUO extends your integration period by 6 months. You do not have to ask. It happens automatically and DUO sends you a letter (same source).
This is separate from the extra time DUO gives some people because there are not enough exam places for Speaking A2, Writing A2 and Speaking B1. That extra time only applies if you get a letter about it (inburgeren.nl).
The B1 or B2 state exam
The B1 and B2 language exams are the Nt2 state exam. After about 5 weeks you can see the result in Mijn DUO, and you also get it by email and post. The exam timetable on staatsexamensnt2.nl lists the day and time results come out for each exam date (duo.nl).
If you pass all four parts, DUO sends the Nt2 diploma by registered post within 4 weeks (same source). More on this exam in the Dutch B1 exam.
If you passed
Each passed part shows in Mijn Inburgering. Once you have passed every exam you need, DUO sends a letter with all your results. Wait for that letter. After it arrives, you can get your diploma (inburgeren.nl):
- Log in to Mijn Inburgering and choose "Diploma".
- You go to Mijn diploma's, where you download your digital integration diploma for free.
- If you also want paper, request it in Mijn Inburgering. Paper is free once and takes up to 8 weeks.
The IND accepts the digital diploma, so you can use it straight away to apply for naturalisation. Only use it as a digital file: a printout of the digital diploma is not valid (inburgeren.nl). Does it ever run out? See do inburgering exams expire.
If you failed a part
You only redo the part you failed. Register for it again in the same way as the first time and pay the fee again, €50 for KNM or an A2 language exam (inburgeren.nl). The parts you already passed still count. For the Nt2 state exam the rule is the same: you retake only the parts you failed (duo.nl).
Book the retake soon. It can take more than 6 weeks to get a date (inburgeren.nl), and with the 16-week wait for Speaking and Writing A2, a late retake can eat a large part of your remaining time. Our guide on how to register for the inburgering exam walks through the booking.
If you had a problem during an Nt2 exam, tell the exam leader on the spot. You can still send a complaint to the College voor Toetsen en Examens up to 3 weeks after the exam (same source).
Use the wait
Two to four months is a long time to do nothing. If KNM is still on your list, start now with our free KNM practice exam: short drills, in Dutch, sorted by the official themes. If you are waiting on a language result, keep reading and listening every day so a retake does not feel like starting over. The 594 most common Dutch words are a good daily habit.
